Slippery Slope – To Other Civil Unions

AN ARGUMENT AGAINST CIVIL UNIONS

P1. Civil unions exclusively between unrelated same-sex couples will likely lead to civil unions between unrelated opposite-sex couples

P2. Civil unions between unrelated opposite-sex couples should not be permitted

C. Therefore civil unions exclusively between unrelated same-sex couples should not be permitted

CONSERVATIVE COMMENTARY

Civil unions are by their very nature, arbitrary. Why are civil unions limited to same-sex couples, limited to two people, limited to a lifelong time period, and limited to not closely related couples?

Because of their arbitrary nature, they exclude different groups who equally seek the same benefits such asĀ

  • Same sex throuples
  • Same sex siblings
  • Opposite sex couples

Without any principled reason for excluding other relationship types, we would expect that over time civil unions would become more inclusive.
