Parental Care

AN ARGUMENT AGAINST NO-FAULT DIVORCE

P1. No-fault divorce makes it riskier for one parent to care for their children (rather than pursue a career)

P2. Making it riskier for one parent to care for their children will lead to many children having less care from their parents

C. Therefore no-fault divorce will lead to many children having less care from their parents

CONSERVATIVE COMMENTARY

Reducing the protection of marriage for the stay-at-home parent will likely mean more stay-at-home parents wanting the security of a career, as the marriage can dissolve through no fault of their own. Patricia Morgan comments:

Promises of greater ‘choice’ may entail people living from day to day with considerable ambiguity about the nature of their relationships and greater possibilities of abandonment. Rather than freedom bringing more control, in the absence of obligations and constraints this intensifies the sense of estrangement and powerlessness.
